In recent years, video calls have become a part of daily life for so many of us. However webcams, even those on expensive MacBooks, have mostly remained the same for a long time, delivering mediocre image quality at best. So when Opal reached out with their C1 webcam, which packs image quality more close to a DSLR camera than a typical webcam, as well as offering a range of smart software features, I knew I wanted to check it out. And well, I’m glad I did, in-fact after testing and using the Opal C1, it has become a part of my workflow and is a product I use everyday!

A nice webcam like this is a really great add-on to any windows- based PC or laptop. Not so sure about Mac users though, as Apple does a way better job making the built-in webcams image quality decent enough so most people would never bother getting some extra devices for that.

Did you encounter any issues with the autofocus? I have seen some threads from about a year ago where there seemed to be a lot of problems with it going 'out of whack' during calls.

The camera quality looks better than the inbuilt macbook camera. How is it compared to the iphone continuity camera ???

I'd go with the black one

I don't see the image quality getting any better on laptops in the near future, not until they come up with some sort of new sensor technology.

Does anyone know of any breakthroughs happening in the sensor world?

PSA: What a horrible camera. I bought this camera a couple weeks ago, such a nightmare to setup and always out of focus. Software doesn't work properly, and support (or the lack there of because their customer service is just as bad) made excuses for where to plug it in. I returned it, I got so tired of it. What a waste of time and money. If you see YouTubers or IGers talking well about this camera, saying MKBHD invested in it to use it as a plus, they're probably cross-advertising, don't fall for it.

Pretty disappointing audio quality imo, you look a tad overexposed too… looks like they need more work on their computational photography algorithms to get better results without having to fiddle with settings.
A tad better image quality than a MacBook but worse audio and more time wasted on adjusting settings doesn’t seem worth $300 to me especially if you have to spend another $200 on a microphone…
