Not since Avatar have I felt really transported to another world, until these 2 films. Halfway through I couldn’t help but feel how similar Denis’ style is to Ridley Scott’s in the 80’s

How would’ve you depicted Butler’s character? Hearing the murderous screams before the doors open to see him for the first time, slashing the servant’s throat just to see how sharp the blade was, making Bautista’s character kiss his foot, lighting the Fremen girl on fire just because. What more did you need? 😂

Big fan! But could NOT disagree more with your take on Butler, he completely encapsulated every single scene he was on. He was able portray both sociopathy and the sorta youthfulness of FR. And yes while he was menacing from the voice to the stature, he was also “principled” to an extent by his own metrics. Great movie!

I don't agree with your take on Butler's depiction, , but you actually rated the film higher than I did.

Just got out of it and also give it 5/5 couches. I will not be able to rewatch it now and not think of Butler being Kylo Ren-esque 🤣. I see what you’re saying about him but his facial work made me a believer in his psychopathy. Jared Leto eat your heart out.

Villeneuve has another project going on after this so i don't think 2-3 years will cut it. I wish though.

Great breakdown of the film. To me, the planet is the main character and that’s fine with me. The humans are drawfed under its scale, losing our emotional connection but filling us with a sense of grand historical-spatial awareness. I too did not buy into Butlers character as much. Felt Walken was very underplayed as well. I enjoyed the mother character a lot more this go round. Found her talking to her fetus very creepy and grotesque. The zealousness of the southern Fremon was well depicted. I look forward to part three for a fuller sense of a harmonious conclusion.

If you have ever read the books, Paul becomes a monster. The movie stayed true to him.

Hey Chris, I read, sadly the book so it's hard for me to appreciate the movie as well as others because the way it was setup was so wonderful in its immersion that no movie is capable of copying that. It can't. I mean, I literally had to learn words in a language that was made up for the book. No movie can do that. Having said that, this is quite a fateful translation (at least part I) so, of course I'll see Part II - when time allows :)
Either way, you are still my favorite reviewer and always will be!

I just watched the movie and it is great but I do have one problem with it they have compressed the time line a lot they have Paul going from inexperienced (as much as the culture goes) outsider to accepted, then build up a cult of personality, crippling spice production, to becoming a messianic leader then defeat the emperor in under 9 months something that took years in the book. So for example he has to travel to the south drink the water of life, rally the people, write a message have it smuggled off world, delivered, the emperor has too gather his legions travel to Dune and loose in about 3 weeks

Meh, I didn't feel much for the changes made to Chani. Little chemistry with Timothee and too much scowling.

Nice review and right on the money. Lots of people have trouble with the director's last name. Lol It's just two syllables. Vill' Noov.

Couldn’t disagree more about Austin Butler’s performance

I really enjoy the film though Chalamet kept kicking me out of the experience. Unfortunately, Chalamet doesn’t work for me as Paul. Literally everything else in the film is great in my eyes.

The black and white scene is up there for one of my favorite scenes in a film ever.

My favorite Denis Villeneuve films are Prisoners and Blade Runner, rare 10/10s for me.

So, Chris, have you read the books? Don’t remember your review from the first movie.

Just saw it last night. I was expecting to like it more. Things wrapped up too nicely. I was expecting some of the villains to carry over to the next movie. But this seems like an ending if they decide not to do another movie. I guess I was expecting an Empire Strike Back, Infinity War, or something cliffhanger. In a way, it is, but just different from all the reviews I was seeing.

Javier Braden and Austin Butler were the standout this time around . Rebecca Ferguson and Timothee Chalemet were good, but I found they better in the first movie since they had separate journeys in this movie.

At this point, I still like the first movie more, but I want to see this movie a few more times to have more perspective.

Chris give it a 6, I won't tell anyone.

The thing that really bugged me about the first movie was for a planet described as so intensely hot and dry that you must wear special suits that recycle your bodily fluids to survive on it, no one ever sweats a drop! May seem like a small thing but it really pulled me out from the sense of risk the planet is suppose to have. Is it more of the same in the second?

Hey Chris, what if I didn’t make it halfway through the first one. Is this one an improvement?
