This sudden dislike of Sonny is sweeping through the cast like a pathogen, and its unrealistic and annoying.
I know this is obviously fantasy, but its a genre grounded in reality.
So, I want to point out, not only would the show be very boring and vanilla without the mob storylines, but also something the characters are all aware of is the fact Port Charles is and always will be a magnet for crime.
Part of why they all as they're now suddenly lamenting "gave Sonny a pass" is because the only way in the Port Charles Canon universe to keep a lid on crime has been working with Sonny as the bridge to the underworld to enforce some semblance of order.
Historically, the "mob" goes back to Kelly's (now Bobbie's diner) with Mob boss Marco Flynn back in 1920s.
Before that, Port Charles lore mentions other crime figures, outlaws, pirates, etc.
Over time, going back the 1970s, the writers have built this up in layers to add intrigue. It's mentioned in Lucy Coe's book "Tour Guide to Port Charles" published by ABC, not to mention the other 2 spinoff books.
Finally, in a real world city that's complex like that, civic leaders would recognize suddenly disrupting the power structure, when they have little to no hope of actually vanquishing crime, would only serve to open a power vacuum that would be far more dangerous than Sonny.
Something they wouldn't be equipped to deal with on their own.
Keep in mind the caliber of villains that PC attracts aren't 2bit thugs and gangbangers, theyre usually international terrorists, armsdealers, mercenaries and cartels.
