Personal headcanon, the reason the Evokers die when killed is because they aren't holding the Totems of Undying. Its the same as when a player dies with one in their inventory as opposed to holding it in one of their hands.

I’m not sure if Mat ever talked about this, but I know Retro Gaming Now did (would highly suggest as a slightly alternate companion to these videos) But we the players use XP to enchant things, put a magical effect on them. And the most common way to get XP is to kill mobs. XP is like soul energy we collect.

So, this episode in particular didn't exactly age well. The thing about there being limited Illagers per world is actually outdated info from before 1.14, where basically endless amounts of all Illagers can be encountered due to the Raid mechanic, and they never run out no matter how many Raids you defeat. Another thing is what you mentioned at 13:16. The mob you described is called an Allay, and with their introduction, Vexes had their body shape changed to resemble the Allay, suggesting a relation. The idea of Evokers creating Vexes now seems to be explained as them corrupting or cloning Allays.

12:07 But that's just a limitation of the lighting engine; all the light is controlled on a per-block basis, and constantly updating lighting to follow a moving entity would be too taxing for performance (ask a redstoner, and they'll tell you how they try to limit lighting updates for this reason). Glow Squids don't light up their surroundings either, for the exact same reason; are _they_ ghosts, too? (I mean, it would be pretty cool if they were, but there's no evidence for it.)
