'Is she Black?': Trump questions Harris' ethnicity at Black media event, White House fires back

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump questioned whether his Democratic rival Kamala Harris is "Black" during a contentious appearance at the country's largest annual gathering of Black journalists on Wednesday.

"Is she Indian or is she Black?" Trump said of his opponent in the presidential race, drawing a smattering of jeers from an audience of about 1,000 people.

"She was Indian all the way, and all of a sudden she made a turn and became a Black person."

Later Wednesday, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre was asked about the incident while speaking to media.

"As a Black woman who is in this position...what you just read out to me, it's insulting," she said, adding "we have to put some respect on her name" because she's currently the vice-president.

Her father is a light skinned man with straight hair. Some Jamaicans are mixed with 3 or more races of people. They have a phrase for it in Jamaica, they call it ‘mix up and blender. She was raised by her mother. Her mother and father divorced when she was young. She moved away with her mother. Her mother came from India. She was raised with influences from that culture.

Trump is only saying out loud what many people have wondered. I never understood her racial identity because I've heard she was of Indian descent and all of sudden they started to say she's black. It's more about how you portray yourself, and that's what he is questioning. Authenticity.
