Alex Wriston (WVDOH) - Reinvesting in 'Why': The Importance of Developing Problem Solving

· Background in teaching and college educational path. Discussion of how problem solving begins and how it is developed in school age students. How can educators and scientists keep students asking “Why?”
· Personal connections through teaching to the WVDOT, specifically working with the WV Bridge Design Contest. My current career situation and how I utilize problem solving skills learned in physics as a student and a teacher. Why individuals with scientific backgrounds can be invaluable in management situations, especially at the WVDOH.
· Further explanation of the importance of infrastructure and how broad of a range of skills is needed. Discussion that WVDOH is not just equipment operators and engineers but a diverse employer from all backgrounds and perspectives to complete projects in a way that allows the public to travers the great state of West Virginia.
Bio:
Alex Wriston is currently a Transportation Maintenance Assistant in District 1 of the West Virginia Division of Highways, where he manages and develops solutions to a multitude of situations that arise daily. Prior to his work at the WVDOH, Alex spent 6 years as a high school physics teacher in the Kanawha County school district developing a multitude of courses as well as working with extracurricular organizations that focused on STEM activities such as VEX Robotics and the West Virginia Bridge Design contest. A graduate of Marshall University studying physics education, Alex also completed his Masters work at Marshall focusing in Technology Learning and Education.
