Find the equation of a line parallel using slope intercept

👉 Learn how to write the equation of a line that is parallel to a given line. The equation of a line is such that its highest exponent on its variable(s) is 1. (i.e. there are no exponents in its variable(s)). There are various forms which we can write the equation of a line: the point-slope form, the slope-intercept form, the standard form, etc.

When given a point (x, y) through which a line passes and the slope (m) of the line, the equation of the line is given by y - y1 = m(x - x1). For parallel lines, the slopes are equal. Thus given the equation of a line and a point through which the line parallel to the given line passes, then the slope of the second line is equal to the slope of the given line. Having found the slope, we can then use the formula stated above together with the given point to find the required equation.

Did you place (3, 12) because you added four to the y intercept from the 4/3? Like the format of 4/3 is y/x?

hehe

@MrBrianMcLogan here are two examples
y = 4x -8 and y =4x +2 are parallel lines even though the y-intercepts are different the slopes (4) are the same so they are parallel
y = 3x -5 and y = (-1/3)x -1 are perpendicular even though the y -intercepts are different the slopes are opposite(one positive one negative) and reciprocals( 3 and 1/3 are reciprocals of each other)
y = 2x -5 and y = -2x + 1 are not parallel or perpendicular, these are two lines that just cross

@MaSaPrincess Yes the y intercept can be different and the lines still be parallel. Remember that parallel lines have the same slope meaning they will never touch(like railroad tracks) Now lets say that two lines do touch they are only considered to be perpendicular when they touch and make four 90degree angles.(think of a cross) The slopes of perpendicular lines are opposite reciprocals.

Thank you sir! My teacher can't explain these math concepts properly also he makes the tests in strange difficult format even though I know to do the problems and get them right his system shows the answer incorrect lol
I understood everything in this 3 minute video than my 2 hours of lecture
Thanks again!
