The Ancestor's Tale: A Pilgrimage to the Dawn of Evolution by Richard Dawkins and Yan Wong is a science book that looks at evolution from the past. Instead of following the path of life from its beginning to the present, the book follows the lineage of humans backwards through time, meeting other creatures that share a common ancestor with us at different times in history. The book is partly based on Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. Each organism tells a story about some part of evolutionary biology, such as sexual selection, speciation, convergent evolution, extinction, genetics, plate tectonics, and geographical dispersal. The book talks about 40 of these points. It starts with the split between chimpanzees and humans, which happened about 6 million years ago, and ends with the beginning of life on Earth, which happened about 4 billion years ago.
