Zihan Geng’s debut film A Song Sung Blue, follows 15-year-old Liu Xian as she spends the summer with her photographer father. In his dingy studio in Harbin, she meets the beautiful and alluring Mingmei. Enthralled, Liu Xian follows her from relationship to relationship and becomes increasingly enthralled with her nonchalant, confident charm. A Song Sung Blue explores self discovery, coming of age, and transitioning from adolescence to adulthood with a lingering melancholy that permeates through every scene. The film explores the collision between two different worlds: feminine and masculine, fiery red and cobalt blue, loving others and loving yourself. Its intimate, tender storytelling perfectly captures the fragility of budding queer experiences and the bittersweet feeling of losing a first love you never really had.
