Ontario Premier Doug Ford announces his government’s three-phase plan to gradually lift public-health measures that are in place due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The premier is joined at the news conference at Queen’s Park by provincial Health Minister Christine Elliott and Dr. David Williams, Ontario's chief medical officer of health. Restrictions in the province will be eased over the coming months based on vaccination rates and improvements in key public health and health care indicators. There will be at least 21 days between stages, with the first phase expected to begin the week of June 14. Before the first phase begins, most outdoor recreational amenities such as golf courses and tennis courts will be allowed to reopen, with restrictions in place, on May 22. There is no indication when schools will resume in-person learning. The entire province has been under a stay-at-home order since April 8. The premier announced on May 13 that he was extending the order until at least June 2.
