The face's marks on the stop motion animation characters (from the short that is not Aardman) are because they are based on the Selk'nam, indigenous people of chilean Patagonia, who used to paint their bodies in mesmerizing patterns to represent spirits.

The authors just said they wanted to use the Star Wars universe to depict the story of colonization of south america. I can't wait to watch it!
