Born on March 22nd, 1890, in Sozopol, Bulgaria, Giorgos Gounaropoulos became a renowned Greek painter known for his dreamlike style. He studied at the Athens School of Fine Arts before moving to Paris in 1919 where he exhibited in Parisian Salons and gained recognition with his first solo show in 1926. Returning to Athens he participated in various exhibitions for the ‘Techni’ and Stamthi’ groups, and received international acclaim, including the Guggenheim Award in 1958. Gounaropoulos had a distinctive style, inspired by ancient Greek pottery, featuring dreamy and poetic compositions emphasising line, light, and shadow. Notable works include illustrations, wall paintings for the Mayor's Office of Athens, and iconography for the Public Hospital of Volos.

In celebration of his birthday, we chose the artwork 'Dream Landscape with Young Woman' from the Greek Collection of the A. G. Leventis Gallery, showcasing his unique artistic expression.
