A brief history of Sunderland's worst ever Premier League season.

In 2003, Sunderland was relegated from the Premier League with 19 points, a record low points tally. Three years later, they broke their own record. Iain Macintosh recounts Sunderland's worst ever Premier League season, featuring such auspicious characters as Mick McCarthy, Jon Stead and Kevin Ball.

This is the narrator needed for the more comical and astounding stories of the game's past. Sunderland being relegated in pitiful fashion, IS such a story. I say this, as a long suffering Sunderland fan.

Narration sounds a little like it should be a children's book. It's not necessarily bad but it's not the same authoritative tone I'm used to!

As a long standing Derby fan, being in a packed Pride Park that season to see Claude (Clod) Davis and Bob Malcolm was truly a sight to behold. Our fans were unbelievable all season long and tickets were not particularly easy to come by. Season tickets sold out rapidly before the season started (my Dad and I couldn't get them for love nor money nor time spent in the lengthy pre-season queue), and individual match tickets at £46 a pop for an adult in the Toyota Stand were even pretty hard to get. Pride Park had sell outs all season of around 33, 000 and honestly if the capacity had been upped to 40, 000 or so (as the owner intended if we stayed up), I think we could have easily filled it - even if we had played atrociously bad football as we did. At least I celebrated my 18th birthday watching Derby play Newcastle (one of the half dozen games I got to watch) and we won our only game that season 1-0 thanks to Kenny Miller. Happy days!

Can't believe people are 'hating' on Ian Macintosh. He's nice guy (not that I've ever met him)

The game that always stays with me from that dire period in Sunderland's history is one against Charlton in 2003, when they lost after conceding three own goals at home...courtesy of their own strikers!!

I, for one, very much enjoyed the voice behind this video. Love your work on the Football Weekly Podcast Iain. Cheers.

These sunderland seasons would look like Real Madrid 2016-18 compared to the Derby County 07/08 season. Please do it. 11 points, 32 consecutive games without a win, -69 goal diff, several games lost for 5-6 goals, 1 single match won in the whole season. I mean this is a level of "shit team" one would struggle to find somewhere else even compared to sunderland.

I like the other narrator more than this one.

As a Derby County fan, please, dear God do not upload that "other story" you mentioned at the end. Please.

I love these portrays of teams, its indept and insightful for a football fan like me. Do you have a video on Liverpool pre Shankly in the 1950's under George Key, I believe it was.

How can a team not bad between the wars and even Champions after WW2 in 1946 get into such a mediocre position in the mid table second teir.

Shankly used the same staff as were there before.

If you could explain that it would be great.

Thank you.

Although this vid is three years old, i'd like it to be known I'm a big fan of this narrator. Sometimes you need this level of jolly to bring you up.

What you've got to remember is that Newcastle bring 52, 000 every home game in the Championship

Please do Derby County next! That was my first premier league season I actually had access to watch pretty much every game and analysis in the US and it was a crazy sight to see. I'd love to hear yall tell the story.
