The Cognitive Neuroscience Laboratory (CNL) in the Australian Research Centre for Interactive and Virtual Environments (IVE) performs research to understand the brain basis of cognitive processing and human performance. The laboratory’s areas of specialisation include language, memory, and the effects of sleep on cognition. We further seek to understand individual differences in human information processing and how these relate to underlying neurobiological differences. In addition to undertaking excellent basic research to illuminate the neurobiology of cognition, we aim to bring cognitive neuroscience “from the lab into the real world” by studying human information processing and performance in complex and dynamic settings that more closely resemble the conditions that people might encounter in their day-to-day lives. To this end, we record brain activity while individuals interact with natural, virtual, or augmented environments.

The technique most commonly used in the CNL is electroencephalography (EEG), which measures the electrical activity of the brain. EEG is a very versatile technique which, through recent technological advances, is highly portable and allows for cognitive processing to be examined as individuals move through natural or virtual environments. We also use it to concurrently measure brain activity in multiple individuals, thus helping to shed light on the brain basis of team work to accomplish a joint task. Complementing our research with EEG, we use eye-tracking as a non-intrusive means of understanding human information processing and attention allocation in a variety of settings from reading to simulated maintenance tasks. The laboratory also includes facilities for transcranial magnetic stimulation.

Our research is tightly intertwined with research education at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Academic staff in the laboratory teach into the Bachelor of Psychology (Cognitive Neuroscience) and the Bachelor of Psychology (Honours) (Cognitive Neuroscience).
