Actually the reason is different than what this shows. You see the chocolate beans we get are from South America not Africa meaning they are grown in very different conditions. Chocolate needs shade to grow well and it takes a while. African chocolate tends to be grown in very sunny conditions meaning the chocolate itself is much smaller and isn’t as good although it is still useful. The entire process of making beans are different depending on the humidity, temperature, and everything else. The beans are shelf stable after fermentation and roasting. Once ground they need to made into product fast as it’s no longer stable as the oil starts to separate from the solids. Once made into something it’s mostly stable again although it has to be eaten fairly quickly. The amount of other stuff we put in depends on country, most chocolate in the states relies on the percentage of actual cocoa oil and solids to added ingredients. White chocolate is mostly oil but dyed white, milk chocolate has powder milk mixed in, dark chocolate is a huge amount of both oil and solids, then the specialty percentage bars are exactly what they say usually up to 90% pure out chocolate.
Unfortunately I can’t have anything with caffeine in it at all so chocolate is out but I still have to know how food is made. So I keep up with every bit of food news I can I know the process as I’ve been to a factory or two before. Restaurant business never goes away as I was raised in that environment.

I have accepted that a lot of Europeans aren't going to like our food even our chocolate. I no longer take offense too much. As long as they don't blatantly insult everything about the United States, I can let jabs against Hersey's chocolate slide. It is what it is. I'm glad you still like our chocolate.

You don't have to be a mind reader to know Diane was fantasizing about swimming in chocolate for most of this video 🍫

Big fan of a Hershey with Almonds and KitKat.

Hershey's plain Symphony bar is really good. It doesn't taste anything like a regular Hershey's bar to me. It's creamier or something. There's also a Symphony bar that has toffee bits in it.

The best part of this particular video ... Diane's drool face when seeing lots of chocolate. Right there with you Diane. Right there with you!

Fun Fact: Cadbury in the U.S. is produced under license by Hershey and Kit Kat's in U.S. made by Hershey, licensed from Nestle.

There's a reason I get my candy at Aldi instead of Walmart.

I’ve never been a big fan of Hershey’s milk chocolate, but I love the Special Dark. The miniatures variety pack is very nostalgic and reminds me of the holidays! This was a cool video!

Little-known fact -- When Milton Hershey died, they saved his body and ground it up. Now a tiny bit of Hershey goes into every batch. That accounts for the difference in flavor.

Great, now I want a Dark Chocolate Milky Way, and they're not easy to find. Thanks Diane.

That was a great video that explains where Hersey gets it unique taste. I will need to take a trip to Europe soon to do a proper chocolate taste test. 🙂

I'v definitely heard those same complaints about the flavor and texture of American chocolate

Why do many people think it taste terrible?
I found this information in an article.

"The secret lies with a chemical that is also found in parmesan cheese, rancid butter - and vomit."

"Some experts believe that's because some companies such as Hershey's puts its milk through a as process called controlled lipolysis

This breaks down the fatty acids in the milk and produces (butyric acid) - the chemical that gives vomit its very distinctive smell and acrid taste."

Many Canadians don't like American Hershey's chocolate. Cadbury chocolate is much more popular here.
In fact the dislike was enough that the Hershey's company made a new chocolate formula for the Canadian market.

In a taste test study it was found Canadians love chocolate, but compared to Americans we prefer richer, smoother chocolate.
Most of the participants claimed that the American chocolate bars were "bland" and "chalky" in comparison to the Canadian chocolate bars. American chocolate bars use a different recipe, along with some other additives that result in a more coarse and waxy texture.

That being said I'v had American chocolate bars and just like most things I liked some of them and not others.

I love Hershey's advertising method in the beginning. He would pick up a wrapper off the ground, and turn it over so the logo was clearly visible.

As a non chocoholic I only eat anything chocolate once or twice a year. Having grown up in Canada our chocolate is a weird mix of English, European, American and Canadian Chocolate. Some of our Chocolate is made by European Companies like Cadbury and Nestles. I leave my share of Chocolate to Diane.

I remember buying a Toblerone chocolate bar from Europe that I got in a duty-free store. Amazing! I have to admit.

When I was a kid and first tasted European chocolate, I couldn't get enough!

There are extremely high quality American chocolates around, they just aren't used on the cheap candy bars.
