I WAS WRONG ABOUT THIS! - Trying out NASCAR Oval Racing

You guys have been "gently suggesting" I give Oval Racing a try for as long as I can remember. I've persistently resisted because frankly, turning left for an entire race seemed boring and like it would require no skill.

Turns out I was WAY WRONG!

Here's what happened.......

I was never interested, never watched it, never wanted to. Until I tried it in iRacing. 100% hooked.

"This is much harder then I thought.... I thought all you had to do was turn left?" - Everyone that tries oval

It's a common misconception about oval racing. I too at one point was one of those people. It's actually very scientific and so much strategy involved. Racing in a pack can be damn scary too!!

Great to see you try Oval racing. NASCAR is what started my love for racing years ago as a kid. When I started road racing it seemed very strange in the beginning. Most people that haven’t tried Oval racing think it’s boring all you do is mash the throttle and turn left. But that couldn’t be further from the truth. Anybody that loves racing give it a chance you’ll probably be surprised at how fun and challenging it is.

I signed up for iRacing a couple months ago strictly to run road races. When I was initially getting my bearings in the app I decided to try a dirt oval race just because it was something that the other platforms don't have. I've been completely hooked since. I now have a B license in Dirt Oval and haven't even gotten around to racing the Mazdas. Sprint cars are so much fun and so intense. Way more subtle handling than I expected. You really have to stay calm in the eye of the storm to do well.

"All we have to do is turn left, right?" - Once the tires warm-up and get some grip, yes. And assuming that the setup gets tighter over the course of a run. And assuming that the camber and caster don't push the car to the left when the wheel is centered. And assuming that you never go from the inside to the outside on the straights. And assuming that you don't need to counter-steer during the turns.

Gotta try dirt oval next and keep this going. It's a riot.

I love all the road course guys thinking that oval racing is easy. turning left is easy but going fast and turning left is another thing. I’m glad you enjoyed it.

NASCAR doesn’t have high performance vehicles, they are very basic highly tunable machines that are constantly on the very edge of traction. There is a lot of skill and concentration being in bumper to bumper traffic going 200+MPH on the razors edge of traction for 3 hours. It’s not as easy as just turning left.

Hey, oval racing is a lot about drafting(1-2 seconds faster per lap) so if you fall away from the pack slowing down for the person behind you to catch up and take turns passing each other or letting the guy behind bump you over and over are valid strategies. 😉
Good vid, hope to see more

Sweet. Couldn't wait for someone to explain this insane discipline to me. Im American and still don't get it. I totally get the Nordachielf but Indianapolis Motor Speedway?....hope this video changes my mind some. I mean, there are hundreds of thousands of fans...must be something to it, no?🤔

Hahahaha welcome buddy!!!
Best way to win it, it’s classifying well and keeping the pace avoiding crashes in the first 2/3 laps where everybody wants to win lol...
Changing tires is also a good option if you até around 10th position ... you will take it back

The drivers say they’re crazy hard to drive irl. Extremely low grip, back end likes to step out, solid rear axle. The 2019 package, they say, is “easy to race” the 2014 and 2016 packages are much harder.

Great video Will. I prefer Talladega or Daytona because of my skill level, lol. 3 more days before delivery of my Podium wheelbase. It's closing in on time to get excited!

Good on you Will. I got iRacing just for the road but now I mainly race everything else. Give dirt oval and dirt road a go. Just the free stuff. You will find all of it a lot more fun to do than to watch. Doing a bit of each will improve your skills in your main discipline too as they all throw different car control techniques at you that will improve overall skill level.

Cool matey, while you was racing all I could hear in my head was the Daytona arcade music ;)

Just discovered your channel, don't play this myself, but the comments are telling you to do dirt oval, so I thought would be interesting to see you do a figure 8 course if that's possible..
