At the #BudgetRoundTable2024 conference, Rahul Kanwal, Executive Director of Business Today, and Siddharth Zarabi, Managing Editor of BTTV, engaged in an insightful dialogue with Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman about the challenges facing India's agriculture sector. FM Sitharaman identified several reasons for the distress in the Agri sector, citing land fragmentation and fluctuating input costs despite subsidies as major issues. She also emphasized that weather uncertainties, such as inconsistent monsoon patterns, significantly impact productivity. FM Sitharaman says While India lacks climate-resilient seed varieties, this year budget includes provisions to develop indigenous seeds that can withstand climate challenges. Addressing questions on export bans of agriculture produce, FM Sitharaman acknowledged the conflict between farmers' desires for profitable overseas markets and consumers' need for stable prices, noting the government's challenge in balancing these demands. She also pointed out that MSP recommendations from the Swaminathan Committee were presented during the UPA era, questioning why the opposition party Congress, which now criticizes current policies, did not implement these measures during their tenure. FM Sitharaman criticized the opposition for not practicing what they preach in states like Himachal and Karnataka, where they hold power.

Nation need money to increase growth rate and meet future challenges for which tax collection needs to be increased and everything shouldn't be put on middle class specifically salaried people. Why can't agriculture bring under tax, agriculture income >20lakh should be taxed @30% these are the people comes with big cars and block roads and contributes nothing to development of the same. Similarly lots of people showing their income as agriculture income would also be address. We need to ensure HNI remains in the country, where we just need to improve the infrastructure and quality of life in the country. We can't say we are allocating same amount from one place to another, collection needs to increase we would need min 100 billion defense, significant increase in education & health and sustainable infrastructure with good air and water quality.

How long shud indians finance agriculture through tax...this interview is flimsy. Somebody tell the lady problem of agriculture is farmers ate uneducated and greedy want benefits always. Modi cant solve the basic intelligence problem of indians. Crores of rupees are being spent on subsidy in agriculture.
