That rifle being heavy is an absolute fact, but at least the effort or carrying it meant you were carrying the finest rifle of the day into action.

He described it perfectly you get used to it, i remember carrying m240s and 249s for so long that when i finally started carrying the m4 it was like air

He ain't kidding about the M1 being heavy. One thing the M4 excels at is being light. Unfortunately, Infantrymen have to carry way more of everything else now.

I went through Coast Guard basic traing back in 1973 and our assigned weapons were the M1 Garand. It was a better drill rifle and was a great 'high porting' weapon because it was so heavy. 'High porting' is where, as you're running, you take your rifle and with both arms, lift it up and down over your head. The M16 was just too light. Fond memories for sure.

When I received the M 1 Garand for the first time in 1960, it was heavy. We crawled on our backs under. barbed wire with live 30 cal machine gun rounds fired over us.
After countless marching, manuel of arms practice and rifle range firing / qualification it wasnt that heavy anymore.

M48 tank training weapons was a whole different ballgame with 45 cal pistol
& sub machine gun, 30 CAL COAXEL MACHINE GUN & 90mm Main Gun / 50 cal ma duece. It was excellent preparation for what might have been. Fortuneately, I was honorably discharged 6 years later prior to US troops being deployed to Viet Nam.

First time I was handed an M1 I thought to myself that the men who carried them were built stronger than men today.
