Remember Web 2.0? That was over fifteen years ago. Let's go back, to the early 2000s, the era of MySpace, Blogger, Foursquare, Tumblr, Friendster, and the origin of social media itself. Let's tell quirky stories and paint pictures of the strange landscapes of creativity online.

Every year it gets harder to contextualize and understand these periods of tech tomfoolery.

That's why, in this series, we're going back, from 2007 onwards, to relive a time of rebellious hackers. Of talented, impatient communities of nerds who, somehow, kept ending up one step ahead of big business. The heyday of blogs, the reinvention of the smartphone, and the dawn of the jailbreak.

Once the stage is set, I'll explain the whys and the hows of the dozen or so Minecraft mods, and over sixty jailbreak tweaks, that I built, some of which when I was just sixteen.

Enjoy!

Oh thank god. A human with a human voice and a human-written video script on a topic I’m interested in has appeared in my recommendations. I’ve only just begun the video but I’d like to say thank you!

Also, you /are/ human… right?

No money maker / "celebrity" type of YouTubers back then - just people explaining stuff to each other and having fun. I could watch youtube of a sonyericsson symbian phone... I could use facebook on a phone that actually fit in the palm of my hand. I had google maps on that phone... No ads...

Back then, you didn’t have to consider if what you were seeing was a way to give money to another person whether it’s ads or sponsored content. Everything was personal and had a purpose
