Thank you for your insightful plans to solve some of our country’s biggest problems. We need actions!
In our state we have a serious teacher shortage too.
Currently, there are two bipartisan bills to repeal WEP and GPO (The Social Security Fairness Act). H.R 82 -325 cosponsors and S. 597-62 cosponsors. Unfortunately, the bills keep getting stalled in committees. Basically, these unfair penalties take “earned” benefits from public service workers (police, firefighters, teachers…) and use it to supplement the SS budget.
I learned of the unfair WEP and GPO penalties after retiring as a state educator. During my lifetime, I had also worked for the federal government as well as other jobs where social security was withheld. Since retiring, I learned because I have a separate state retirement my monthly SS benefits will be reduced from around $1300 to $700 (WEP penalty) and if widowed my spousal benefits will be reduced to zero (GPO). If a business owner withheld 401K benefits from employees because they had retirement benefits from a previous career they would be prosecuted! Isn’t that what the federal government is doing?
