Peggy Sue was originally entitled ‘Cindy Lou’, after Holly's niece, the daughter of his sister Pat. It was renamed after Peggy Sue Gerron (1940–2018), the girlfriend and future wife of Jerry Allison, the drummer for the Crickets, after the couple had temporarily broken up. Buddy’s recording (backed by The Crickets) was released as a single in July 1957, with ‘Everyday’ as the B-side. It reached #3 on the Billboard Top 100 chart. The song was ranked #194 on Rolling Stone magazine's 2004 list of the "500 Greatest Songs of All Time".
