Richard Heene from Colorado launches a homemade hot air balloon and suddenly realizes that his youngest son, Falcon, is nowhere to be found. He shouts that the balloon is untied, and his older sons claim they saw Falcon climb into the basket, now rising into the sky. The parents, in a panic, report this to the media and emergency services. Television helicopters take to the air, and millions of Americans hold their breath, watching the fate of the boy supposedly in the helium balloon. After hours of flight, the balloon descends, and rescuers rush to it, only to find it empty. Did Falcon fall out? A few hours later, Falcon is found hiding in the garage attic. It turns out the entire event was a stunt orchestrated by the parents for publicity. In a later interview, when asked why he was hiding, Falcon said, "Well, you told me we were doing this for the show." The parents were sentenced to community service and fined $36,000, though the operation cost around two million dollars.
