This presentation was first given at the 2018 “Mastering the Subsurface Conference” in Pittsburgh, PA, and later at the 2018 Society of Exploration Geophysicists Annual Convention, at the Development & Production Luncheon, in Anaheim, CA.
Technology integration and collaboration are critically important to the success of oil and gas and carbon storage projects. There are technical, organizational and psychological barrier to overcome. This is illustrated using examples from unconventional shale oil and gas reservoirs; although, the process can be generalized to conventional reservoirs as well.
Knowledge sharing, and building management platforms and communities of practice, are important. Sharing learnings across academia, national laboratories, oil companies and service companies, and across disciplines are also critical.
For unconventional reservoirs, key theme areas include: reservoir management and production enhancement; real-time autonomous sensing; and induced seismicity characterization and mitigation. Enabling technologies include: novel geochemistry measurements in the lab that need to be validated in the field; full-physics and full-chemistry multi-scale modeling including geomechanics; physics-based machine learning; and advanced sensors and real-time data management.
