From Chicago so I get to see lead an oakum joints being done still. A lot of the older guys either swear by it or complain that its too old and archaic. I personally think its a good skill to have especially if you're doing repairs and find it out in the field. Couldn't imagine not being allowed to solder that is a really important skill to have.

Im a pipe fitter and have access to pro press. In my house it’s all sweat joints . Done right it’ll last a hundred years

The issue is most companies are having to onboard people with 0 experience straight from McDonald’s into a truck and on their way to your house to change out you’re water heater with minimal training 😂

I used to work for a company that believed that a customer hired a plumbing company to do a professional job which included only soldering. I was also told that if a customer needs work done they feel like they have to call a plumber because people often don't feel comfortable soldering. I'm not sure I believe that completely but I learned so much while I was there and my soldering skills increased exponentially!

I wouldn't ever run my whole house in pex and or press copper. Solder joints cleaned after solder is solid but hot.

I've worked for companies who don't do sweat. No tanks stocked in truck. It's a goddamn joke.

Roto Rooter doesn't really let you solder because the vast majority of their employees (I won't call them plumbers) are incompetent

The first thing when I got into my class is that we were learning how to solder…

thats crazy because I had to convince my old bosses to use pro press. You're right though. if they can't solder they shouldn't be plumbing

Don’t need to be so old school, come on now. Get over yourselves. Times change, methods change. I am in commercial plumbing and it’s not my company, but what the specs call for. Over the past 5 years, I am using uponor or pro press 90 percent of the time. It is what it is and I still take pride in my work

Soldering isn't an issue it's being allowed to use a propress at the company I work for

I been doing plumbing only for 9 years and I’ll solder something in a heart beat lol. If I can’t solder I’ll use a “shark bite”(push to connect)… it’s all the same thing, lol 😝

I never understood when people use the phrase “I don’t believe in…..” it’s like saying you don’t believe in gravity. That’s fine; but it still exist.
