You would NEVER guess that Jack Buchanan was suffering with cancer of the spinal cord from this clip. He was a real professional. He was a real trooper! This is my favorite clip from “The Band Wagon”.

I love this. Deceptively simple. And I love Jack Buchanan's voice.

This song was first done in 1929 in a show called "The Little Show" Clifton Webb sang it while the curtain was down
They put a pin spot on him and he sang while they changed the set. George Burn and Gracie Allen were in the show also

Watched the Fred Astaire Band Wagon Movie over and over again. I love all the musical numbers but this is my favourite followed by More Beer.

Aah...two fabulous performers. They were completely in harmony and complemented each other's talents so beautifully in this number, to the extent that they both shone brightly as the dazzling stars they were.

Nobody ever could quite touch Fred Astaire for the easy, near languid grace that made all his performances look simply effortless. But Jack Buchanon came in a close second here. It's just a joy to watch this number.

Astaire is, as usual, tops, but somehow I can't take my eyes away from Jack Buchanan. He's got personality to burn.

Clifton Webb suggested jack for the band wagon best decision he ever did

Beautiful..Hollywood didn't want to let Fred Astaire go, still dancing (and singing) when he was in his 50's I think it was Arthur Schwartz who wrote this great musical score

Clifton Webb, first choice as Jeffrey de Cordova, had premiered this song in 'The Little Show', the first Broadway revue by lyricist Howard Dietz (who became MGM's publicity chief) and composer Arthur Schwartz. Webb dropped out of the movie and suggested importing Jack Buchanan. Another Schwartz & Dietz song dusted off for the film was 'By Myself', sung by Fred but introduced on stage by Jack in a 1937 Broadway show. That production also contained 'Triplets', filmed with Fred, Jack and Nanette Fabray.

I know they're actors, but they look like they're actually enjoying doing this bit.

More complete lyrics. Apparently this tune started with completely different lyrics.

I beheld her and was conquered at the start,
And place her on a pedestal apart;
I planned a little hideaway
That we should share some day.
When I met her I unfolded all my dreams,
And told her how she'd fit into my scheme of what bliss is;
Then the blow came when she gave her name as "Missus"!

I guess I'll have to change my plan,
I should have realised there'd be another man!
I overlooked that point completely
Until the big affair began!

Before I knew where I was at,
I found myself up on the shelf and that was that!
I tried to reach the moon, but when I got there,
All that I could get was the air!
My feet are back upon the ground,
I've lost the one girl I found.

I guess I'll have to change my plan,
I should have realised there'd be another man!
Why did I buy those blue pyjamas
Before the big affair began?

My boiling point is much too low
For me to try to be a fly Lothario!
I think I'll crawl right back and into my shell,
Dwelling in my personal hell!
I'll have to change my plan around,
I've lost the one girl I found.
