problem with comparing averages, is libraries have a harder time buying ALL volumes when a series has a metric ton of them (be it school, local, or private)... even personal collections.... like i dont wanna shelve 100 volumes of one piece, even if its a top 10 for me

While this is more fair it does suffer from recency bias. There are more people buying manga now than there were 20 years ago, so a more recent series is likely to do better.

Next time you can look into the marketshare of each manga.

Demon slayer was the first manga to outsale One piece in like more than a decade in total yearly sales when the anime was in the spotlight, mixed with the final arc in the manga being released.

Simple stories like demon slayer can’t catch a break lol. I get that a story being so straightforward isn’t sometimes the most enjoyable for people who love complex stories like aot, and that’s why it leaves a bad taste in their mouth when a story as simple as demon slayer is topping rankings. But I mean, it’s got everything to succeed with it. It’s got some of the best animation I’ve seen, it’s got very easy to like characters, and well.. the fact it’s a simple story means more people can grasp it and comprehend it. For me, simple doesn’t always mean bad. Just because a story isn’t groundbreaking and changing the entire space doesn’t mean it’s bad. It’s not the goat of all stories, but it’s not as bad as I see some people make it out to be. Yes, it’s got some bullshit here and there, but for me, I just need a story that I can involved characters I can root for and just a nice story that can entertain me for a bit.
