What's shocking is that those cloths are STILL down in the basement of the abandoned hospital in Pripyat (some guides would take you down there) and they're STILL hot enough to set your dosimeters off that you have to carry.

U can’t expect to be alive long after being a frontline at that time. Gamma radiation can passed everything except lead, but a small amount of radiation still can pass through it. That’s why we should give them a big respect.

What makes these clothes dangerous is the dirt and the particles on them.
Perfectly clean, they would be harmless, but they probably cannot be cleaned entirely.

It takes only one particle to be detached from a cloth and to enter your nose and "settle" in your lungs to be exposed to dangerous level of radioactivity for years
