The war in Ukraine isn’t just about Ukraine

We are at crossroads in history and China is watching. We can either support a European democracy now and deter China or acquiesce and watches China takes Taiwan within the decade.

Why should America care?
Because you signed the 1994 Budapest memorandum to ensure Ukraine's freedom.
If you cant stick to your own commitments, how can Taiwan or NATO have confidence you'll back them if they need help?
It compleyely undermines global security.

The US’ support for democracies historically hasn’t exactly been spotless, but I agree with you entirely. Supporting Ukraine is both morally and geopolitically a good thing for the US and its allies.

And believe me there are many countries around Russia and China that are being influenced and quietly invaded by Russia and China. For example Georgia. Georgia wanted to join the EU and NATO just like Ukraine, but got invaded by Russia in 2008.

The problem, the bigger problem, is that most Americans don't seem to understand the role the country plays in the world. They like their Japanese and German cars, their Korean cell phones, their consoles and computers with chips made at TSMC in Taiwan. All of that relies on the status quo being maintained.

The main problem, and I say this as a Brit, is that the EU is not doing its part despite being a lot closer. I think the politics in the US would be a lot less polarised if the EU was stepping up and it was not, once again, the USA that was paying through the nose to defend Europe from a mess that it helped create.

Also, it would help if the US economy wasn't in such dire straits and people hadn't just spent the last 4 years dealing with high inflation and rising crime. I can understand why people who are suffering economic hardship, who aren't getting the help they need from the state, would object to their taxes being sent to another country. The optics are terrible.

You only have to look at the most recent hurricane response, which has been terrible, with concerns about FEMA's funding, only to have millions be sent to Lebanon. Again, it's terrible optics.

If USA is going to help Taiwan the same way it helps Ukraine there will be no Taiwan in 2030. I am talking about giving 14% of requested weapons and forbidding of use american weapons on russian territory.

Ukraine can't lose that war. It has already won the hearts of many people because they fight like lions.

USA has (up to now) always seen the fact that open societies mean open markets where they can sell their goods.
They should keep that in mind.

As a sinophile and someone who has spent some time in China they are definitely watching, and helping Russia in Ukraine.
Their media, which is literally run and controlled by the CCP, talks a lot about Taiwan, especially when the economy is bad, like it is right now.
Everything wrong in China is blamed on “the west” and “the US”.. whether it’s actually got anything to do with them or not.

There are US citizens who bemoan their government sending $billions in aid and weapons to Ukraine saying it's not their fight, the war is on another continent and shouldn't concern them. To me these people are like the Ostrich, bum in air, head in sand. The war in Ukraine is every Democratic country's fight and we all should support Ukraine for as long as it takes for Russia to realise the error of its ways and withdraw.
