For any symmetric shape you can use a hard paper folded in half and draw a shape on it. Cut the half and trace the outline on other half and again cut along the outline. Then spread open the paper and trace on the cardboard. This way you can make a stencil for many such projects of same size.
I too made a shivling a year ago and while I was away two monkeys entered our house and tore the top of the shivling to find out any food available inside. I guess they thought of the shivling as a snacks container kept on the fridge.

Today I reconstructed the dome structure and will finish painting it till this weekend. Thinking to make Vasuki and Nandi alongside to accompany Lord Shiva.
