The the wrong and the right way to insulate a loft .

One of our customers was advised by a different company to insulate their roof rather than the ceiling. They have used 50 mil foil back to insulation board on the roof. That is not thick enough, if you are going to insulate your roof, you would need 150 mm. The problem arises as there is no heating in the loft, so your heating up an empty space, also the eaves where your cavity lies, needs to be free for the air to pass over the cavity, you cannot cover up the cavity as this will cause damp through the house. So in effect insulating a roof will have no improvement on insulating the rest of the building. Where it needs to be insulated is on the ceiling. As you can see in this video, we have fitted 300 mm of insulation and also Loft Zone legs and rails for a bit of boarding for storage.

Why insulate under the boards? You need heat to come up from the rooms below if it's to be a usable space and you have insulation in the rafters to stop the heat from escaping.

Great video. Can you lay new insulation on top of existing old insulation?

I've got a loft conversion and I don't think the eves have been insulated and we always have a cold draft coming downstairs...am i right in thinking it's because of the insulation missing? boards have been put down but when i've had one up there is nothing down

I have no idea what's up with my loft. When it is warm in my room, water starts to leak from the ceiling in the cold that is. I thought there was a leak in my loft, but I was wrong. It is all due to condensation. Even with my window open in my room, if the weather outside is around 2°C or below, then bits of water start to form on my ceiling. In the summer it's perfectly fine. I was told that it was due to the loft insulation being done incorrectly.

LOL i recall (in common sense ) that 4 inches was enough since ceiling held by 4"x2" so you can still board over, then we had in 90, s 8" is the new standard, then its 10" .
Exactly when is it going to stop?, will loft space be still available? in 10 years time for another change?.
Insulating the roof under tiles what does that achieve, surely 99% of the heat lost through ceiling has been stopped by the 12" insulation under the new floor!.
Fools and money indeed are soon parted, the costs are astronomical .
what next 10 feet of external insulation of walls, OCTAL glazing?, clear plastic insulating Dome over the house?.
