17:35 (#53) Mario's official color scheme was originally blue shirt, red overalls. He was portrayed this way in all the official artwork despite it not matching his in-game sprites in most games. It didn't officially change to the more modern red shirt, blue overalls version until SMB 3, thus the cartoon version was, in fact, correct for the time period when it came out.

You didn't mention Princess Peach's name used to be Princess Toadstool or that Super Mario Bros. 2 in Japan became the Lost Levels here in the US. Our version of Super Mario 2 was a Japanese game called Doki Doki Panic and it was just converted to the Mario world here.
