Screen Printing Tee Shirts: How To Price Your Screen Print Work

There are literally many different ways to try to figure out how to price your screenprinting work. There are equations, spreadsheets, programs, add on software and more. But ultimately it comes down to the “going rate” in your geographical area and what you’re happy making “per hour” in the end. Also remember spreadsheets and software often does not take into consideration the very different labor times involved with different print jobs. So we have to look at each job specifically and see how long it will take to produce. The consumables factoring into this equation should be negligible since we should be using them and managing them properly in how we work. In other words if a $40 gallon of ink is an overhead issue, you’re doing something seriously wrong. Ink and emulsion per shirt should end up being pennies not dollars and a gallon of ink or emulsion will make you thousands of dollars when used properly. Obviously when you first start learning to screen print you will use more consumables than you will once you gain some experience.

One thing I've seen a lot of printers miss on, is leave room for screwups! I always order at least 1 extra of each size, color, and style, whenever I do an order. You never know when something is going to happen, like oops, one got scorched, or bled through on tape, etc.. Yes, you can use a zip gun to fix minor errors, but you can't use it on big mistakes, or on discharge inks.
Also, I've noticed that bare bottom pricing only brings bare bottom customers, the less they pay, the more they complain, and won't have any issue finding another supplier, if they can save .02 per garment.. If you have higher prices, and provide quality printing, you'll get a lot more customers, both repeat, and referral, than ones that only use you, because 'you're the cheapest place in town' (and have a lot less headaches, than from customers who don't want to spend money to begin with.)

Glad I'm back printing again. I've got to get to Arizona and pick your brain a little more. Much needed advice in this video.

Jonathan, what happens when your customers compare your prices with what they can get from, for example, Custom Ink, with no charges for artwork, screens, setup, ect.?

I my self visualize of where I'm at compare to others and how they got to be where there at .. that being said (1). how they make a profit (2) how they manage to pay overhead (3) how they manage to pay employees (4) how they manage to pay for machines on top of how they mange to pay to fix them... breakdowns (4) .. I guess that's why so many company's go under...I have over 100 products and its seems like I always need something like screens, emulsion, of white & black ink, and softhand... You really should try to price high and see if you can get away with it and if so continue to do so find... a good price and don't bid...but market I rather you do a small job and get paid good then to bid on a job and work for unless hours and feel tired and used there success in the printing industry or is a just a pipe dream?

I love you man but neither of us are good businessmen. Ha ha ha. Good sales and not low prices are the key. If you compete on price and not on service you are doomed.
