Can't thank you enough Mr. Friedkin for all the GREAT movies you entertained me with!!!

French Connection 1 and 2 are two of my favourite crime movies, although No. 2 has received some flak. And the concluding scene of Popeye so exhausted he's barely able to breathe but soldiers on to reach the point where Charnier's boat is heading, is IMHO some of the finest acting in film history.

Self-deprecating, self-effacing, absolutely hilarious, infinitely talented. William Friedkin.

Peter Boyle would have been very good in the role of Popeye Doyle, but maybe not quite as good as Hackman.
One thing’s for certain: He would have been scarier.

Gleason would have been a disaster, he didn't have the internal or external toughness to play the role.

It’s a shame Peter Boyle was so resentful towards the film Joe, I think he would’ve been on par with Gene Hackman as Popeye Doyle.

Gleason would've made a great Popeye Doyle. Wonderful dramatic actor, as was Jonathan Winters.
