Oh wow. I didn't know being massively underpaid and applying non-stop like crazy while the bills keep piling and food becomes hard was a _state of mind._ Thanks, Secretary Carson.

Hmmm thats a good point, poverty is ALSO a state of mind. He philosophically states that people who dont giveup after failing can always get back up. He didnt say broke to begin with. Also, it seem that a lot of people who commented here didnt even bother to analyze what he said.

He's right if a poor person won the lottery they will most likely be poor again in a matter of months, cause they still have that mindset of poverty. Instead of investing that money in stocks, a business, or anything that will allow they to make more money from what they have so they won't run of of money, but instead they spend it on expensive cars, clothes, houses, yachts, drugs, or gambling without realizing they have a limit and when they hit that limit they end back where they were in the beginning barely able to afford food, we've seen this happen to many lottery winners it isn't new, people need to think before blindly slamming Ben for his statement, a world of free lunches is a fantasy you gotta pick yourself up and find it.

He said "I think poverty to a large extent is ALSO a state of mind." Which s a completely true statement. This not listening,  is how we get people saying "Money is the root of all evil" instead of "LOVE OF MONEY ..." aka Greed. Pay attention !!

Ben- (walks up to hungry poor child) "Hi little fella, how are you?"
Hungry Child-"mister, do you have anything to eat I'm so hungry?"
Ben-"well where's your momma? Have her make you lunch"
Hungry Child-"she died and my dad is gone locked in jail for doing what he could to feed my brothers and me"
Ben-"oh I see. You need to change your mindset that's why your hungry"

Carson says that you can escape poverty by working hard and putting in the effort. How evil.

I agree with Ben Carson not because of any political views but because I have been through alcohol and addiction recovery, alcoholism and drug addiction have a unique way of bringing a person to the bottom and I have seen 100s of examples exactly what Ben Carson said .

Well he is right on this. If you're in poverty in less you are disabled or sick then yes poverty is a state of mind. If you have the mindset that you are suppose to live in poverty and don't take advantages of opportunity to get yourself out of poverty then yes it is a mindset. Just like being rich is a mindset if you have the mindset that you can be rich and take advantage of the opportunities that are given to you, work hard and take risk then you can be rich.

Poverty is a disease of the mind. Mr Carson is absolutely right. The rich and the poor is separated by the way they think that is why their results are not the same.

Let's all have a pity party and rage at the successful black man. We're all so systemically

You heard that folks. Change your thinking, now take your good feels to the grocery store and try to buy food with that. Pay your electric bill with positivity.

It can be a state of mind for some ppl for example: IF YOU CASH YOUR PAY CHECK AND YOU KNOW YOU HAVE BILLS DUE BUT YOU BUY THOSE NEW JORDANS
IF YOU GOT 5 KIDS AND EXPECTING ANOTHER BUT CANT AFFORD
The list goes on....
there are ppl who blindly help a system that was created to hinder them.
Being poor is totally different from poverty. I'm poor today simply because I don't make enough money and I'm in school

Doesn't Dr. Ben realize that he is basically saying that Nothing he has done is actually an accomplishment in any way because absolutely anyone with a good attitude could do exactly the same thing. Ok, maybe in his case...
