In January, 2015, American rock climbers Tommy Caldwell and Kevin Jorgeson captivated the world with their effort to climb The Dawn Wall, a seemingly impossible 3,000 foot rock face in Yosemite National Park, California. The pair lived on the sheer vertical cliff for weeks, igniting a frenzy of global media attention. But for Tommy Caldwell, The Dawn Wall was much more than just a climb. It was the culmination of a lifetime defined by overcoming obstacles. At the age of 22, the climbing prodigy was taken hostage by rebels in Kyrgyzstan. Shortly after, he lost his index finger in an accident, but resolved to come back stronger. When his marriage fell apart, he escaped the pain by fixating on the extraordinary goal of free climbing The Dawn Wall. Blurring the line between dedication and obsession, Caldwell and his partner Jorgeson spend six years meticulously plotting and practicing their route. On the final attempt, with the world watching, Caldwell is faced with a moment of truth. Should he abandon his partner to fulfill his ultimate dream, or risk his own success for the sake of their friendship?

We go from basically no current climbing films/documentaries to having two major ones about the SAME MOUNTAIN released theatrically in the same Autumn? I don't even care. That's freaking awesome. Can't wait to see both of them - Honnold's and Caldwell's.

I know some people get confused between free climbing and free soloing. This film is about free climbing the dawn wall(with ropes protecting falls), which was thought impossible until Tommy and Kevin did it. "Free Solo", the other film, goes up the route called Freerider, one of a handful of routes on the wall that are known to be climbed with ropes only protecting falls. Both feats, should be cemented in history.

One of the best documentaries ever. And probably the best feat ever made in climbing history. Caldwell made his own route from scratch and made it after years of training and obsession... AMAZING. No other human climbed that wall ever for it's difficulty. Alex Honnold also said this is the best climb achievement and he didn't even want to try.

Don't know why I just love this so much more than free solo. That was one incredible bit this one felt so much more human. Dealing with Trauma, overcoming adversity, breaking new ground, my leaving your friend behind. It just really hit the emotions.

One of my all time favorite films, regardless of genre. It is a compelling story on so many different levels. The backstory leading up to the climb (no spoilers from me), the perseverance and drive, and the epitome of a true partnership. Congratulations to both Tommy and Kevin. My family just shakes their head when I tell them I'm going upstairs to watch The Dawn Wall, again!

I was at Yosemite today, currently at a hotel in Mariposa, and I just now got done watching this. Here I am trying to get the momentum on climbing the Upper Yosemite Falls Trail tomorrow, and here are these two guys who freakin climbed the Dawn Wall! before I left the park today, I had the privilege on talking with a guy who climbed El Capitan 10 times, and he told me about this documentary, and I sure am happy I ran into him. What Tommy has to go through when he was younger was so scary but his story continues to be very positive and inspiring. And I have so much respect for him especially after he decided to wait for his partner and finish this great climb together!
