Silver vs Gold - Difference in Amount & Weight

What does a pennyweight of gold look like vs a troy ounce of silver? I know I'm not perfect and I didn't order the right amount of gold but you can learn from my mistakes.

As you might know, gold is a very heavy metal. If you are like me and use a lot of silver, you kinda know how much silver you would need to make something...well throw that out the window when it comes to gold. I will show you how much of a difference there is when it comes to silver vs gold. I think that seeing stuff like this will help you visualize things better when ordering metals.

Love your channel! In the back of Tim McCreight's book Complete Metalsmith there are several tables that convert weights of different metals. For example if you know the weight of a ring you make in sterling and you want to make it in 18k gold you would multiply the weight by 1.48. Hope this helps.

Yeah.. That density is a killer. Golds is far denser that even lead as far as density goes. At least pure gold is. Silvers much lighter.

For those of you wondering, the density of gold is about 20g/cm3 (19.302) and the density of silver is about 10g/cm3 (10.49). This means for the same amount of gold compared to silver you will need just under twice as much material. (1.84)
If cou calculate with the cost of the metals (silver 0.54 usd/g and gold 50, 96usd/g) you pay about (not exact) 200 times the money for gold as for silver.
This calculation is based on the list prises tho so in real-life, because most jewelers don't by huge amounts of the metals it may varie.
If you calculate with the exact values i used to write this comment (March 2020) you get to (19, 302÷10, 49)(5.096÷54) which is about 173.65 times as much.

Found this interesting Randy 👌.! For us that don't live in US does a penny weight mean a cents worth? 🤔 Lol.. That's probably a stupid question but as someone that's only worked in silver Iam at the stage where I feel ready to branch out into doin a little with gold

I've just trasitioned from copper to silver and loving it, so much easier to work with.
Well done for including your mistakes, I've always said it's better to learn from someone elses mistakes before yor own ;@)

This is probably why when you buy wire they charge by gauge and length and not by weight. I suppose if you cast your own wire you might order materials in grain form which would of course be by weight. I myself wouldn't know having only ordered ss wire online.

if I made a copy of a silver bangle (27gm)...how much gold would I need to copy it into a gold one

I haven’t bought any gold yet, and the difference in the way it’s weighed measured and sold is partly why. How does a pennyweight compare to a gram? Is DWT a division of a pennyweight? I wish they’d just sell it by the gram.

What if I cast a silver piece to gold is it gonna weight the same? As the silver ?

Weight aside, you could make some really nice mokume gane with those, make a ring plus have some spare metal.

Thank you for another great video! This doesn’t have anything to do with the video, but do you have any tips on how to cut 90 degree angles with a jewelers saw without breaking the blade? Thank you!

I've been thinking of making some gold jewelry here soon. What gauge is that wire?
