This is a video in my new Core Concepts series -- designed to provide students and lifelong learners a brief discussion focused on one main concept from a classic philosophical text and thinker.

This Core Concept video focuses on Fyodor Dostoevsky's short work of existentialist literature, Notes from Underground, and specifically discusses the assumptions made about laws of nature, social science and planning, and the will. These tend to be made from perspectives that could be categorized as enlightenment, rationalist, utilitarian, positivist, or liberal, which were quite common in the 19th century.

Interesting stuff. "Afraid of reaching the goal", I see that in so many people and myself sometimes. Idleness is scary though. Possibly a fear I need to explore more...

9:35 to decide for one's self is the aesthetic and Philosophical attitude actionable as a skill.

We already have algorithms in Psychological fields to affect desire under predicted controls.

Dr. Sadler, I don't know if you've already made a video covering this, but could you please do some refutations on the matter of determinism or the question of free will. I've searched all over the internet and I cant get out of the deterministic fatalistic mindset and would love to have my views challenged. Thanks for all the great work.

So it would seems that according to Dostoevsky the problem is not the lack of knowledge or technology, but it is that we prefer evil over good, sometimes.
So even after all these years of progress we still see alot of suffering in the world and deep down we don't really want it to end or maybe we do want it to end, but we are just not capable to end it.

It's like Jesus said to Nicodemus.: 'Darkness cannot come to the light',
The enlightment thinkers can just ignore that, but it does not mater because they are sinful whether they realise it or not.
And the better the enlightment project wil go, the more they wil falsly asume that they are not evil, the deeper they dig a hole for themselves.

We can make life more convienent, but we cannot change human nature.

Intrestring stuf. I can imagine enlightment thinkers not wanting to hear that. They must have hated the guy.
