MAC canons in the beginning of the Human Covenant war went powerful enough to damage eve the shields on the covenant ships but that changed very fast.

They use railguns so they can crack covenant ship shields. Rockets, and side cannons do almost nothing against covenant shields. rail guns/ mac guns put the most amount of stress on shields and sometimes cut clean through them.

MAC cannons are absolutely insane coil guns, especially that coil guns are generally less powerful than a rail gun. But I can see why they went with a coil gun, given that they're less complex, easier to maintain on account of less wear, more efficient power wise requiring less power/use. I shudder to think what kind of power a railgun of the same tech level would produce in this universe.
