Oof. My dad never told me this. Despite all the crap my siblings and I (his kids, except for me) put him through, my step-dad never failed to tell us that he loved us.
He let me and my little brother (6 and 4 at the time) talk him into trying to jump a massive dirt jump on his 4-wheeler. He hit the other side and broke a couple ribs. We ran over freaking out before he told us to calm down and go grab my uncle. He lifted the 4-wheeler off him, and we hugged our dad like crazy. He patted us on the heads and asked us if it was cool seeing him fly. We regailed him with how awesome it was and he smiled the whole time.
Paramedics got there and put him on a stretcher and we freaked out again, thinking he was super hurt. The dude sat up in his stretcher and told us to relax and that he loved us. He said it was fun and he'd try it again sometime.
Wham. Hero status achieved.
That man could be super disappointed in us, but he'd take us out for a drive and talk about why we did what we did was bad. He was a great dad. Really miss him
