Housing Market Mortgage rates remain high, home sales — and in some areas, home prices as well — are hitting the brakes, and uncertainty is permeating the market. It’s no wonder many homeowners, prospective sellers, and hopeful buyers are feeling nervous. As of June 14, the average 30-year fixed mortgage rate stood at 6.86 percent. The Federal Reserve raised rates for 10 meetings in a row in an effort to curb inflation, before taking a pause at its recent June meeting. And sales of previously owned homes are down 23.2 percent since last spring, according to the National Association of Realtors' most recent existing-home sales report. Today we discuss what is happening in today's housing market and what has happened in past markets as we speak to Vince Mellinger who has owned 9 homes over the past 60-plus years.

My dad bought our family home in the San Fernando Valley which is about 35 minutes from LA California in 1954. He paid about $12, 000. His mortgage payment was $134 per month. My mother didn't need to work and my dad made an average income. About 9 months ago I went with my daughter to buy her a used car. It was a seller's market and the 2008 car with a little over 100k miles cost about what my dad paid for our family home. One news reporter mentioned a while back that with all this technology, it makes sense that life should be easier, not harder. I believe the bad economy is related to Nixon taking us off of the gold standard. Now money is printed that is not backed by anything. Too much printed, devalued paper and wages haven't kept pace. Fiat currency is viewed today as a scam and a method of stealing from working people.

When I graduated from high school in the early '70s the minimum wage in California was $1.75 an hour. Gas was .40 cents a gallon. You could get a used car for $200. 3 bd Houses were about $25-$27k Apartments were about $150-$250 a month.

My Dad was also in Korea. My Dad is Army retired. He retired in 1963. My Dad is no longer with us.
