It’s an homage to a Japanese movie character called “Afro Tanaka”. 2012 name of character and movie. He was born with kinky hair. The Japanese are enamored with African American peoples styles and looks. Take it for what it’s worth. The product is called “ Afro Melon Bread”.

Maybe I’m tripping, but it seems more flattering than disrespectful. It’s honestly elaborate. And it shows a mixed race person unapologetically with *our* hair type in a country where they’re likely incredibly rare. There’s no performative hyping of representation and inclusion to gain hollow rep, they just did it for the sake of it. Much better than what them folk often be doing in western media tbh 🤷🏿‍♂️
