Third way is the way we atleast in Finland are being taught. Our driving school has to give lessons in economical driving, which means using the engine braking. Slippin the clutch to a lower gear, while approaching a set of traffic lights, increasing the chance that you don't have to stop at all. When done correctly it does not wear the clutch abnormally.

In Germany, and many other European countries, learning manual driving is standard. Engine braking is also learned as default.
Starting at a mountain, with manual clutch is a must. You won't get a driving license without mastering this.

Before I got my old Honda a few months I was watching your How To Drive A Manual series, and it did help me learn to drive manual, however the only real way to get good at driving manual/stick is just to practice it. Of course having the knowledge of the theory side is also good.

If you're stopping at a light where you're going to be there for a minute or so then keep it in neutral, but for a stop sign keep it in 1st (or 2nd if you do a California roll)

theres 2 types of stopping at the red light:
-neutral with brake (sometime counts as a mistake in driving tests because its not safe)
-1st gear with clutch (wears out the throwout bearing of the clutch a bit more)

Just got my first car, which is a 9th gen Civic Si with a 6-speed manual. Been driving my parent's vehicles before it which were all automatics. Just gonna say, it's easier than I expected but one of my issues is judging when to brake. When coming to a stop sign, I tend to brake and go into neutral too early and stop a good distance away from the stop sign. This is quite helpful, and I'll keep these things in mind when out on the road.

In driving schools you just downshift. Clutch in, downshift and slowly release the clutch. The car can never be in neutral because it's dangerous as you can't accelerate if you need.
