TIA Research Fellow Pieter Raedts shares an update from the dairy farmlet trial for June 2024, including:
• Observations from recent re-seeding of farmlet pastures
• How are the paddocks coping with winter frosts?
• How are the farm team managing the risk of slugs?
The dairy farmlet trial is underway at TIA's dairy research facility (Elliott, North-West Tasmania) to help farmers maintain efficient, profitable and sustainable pasture based dairy systems into the future. We have an ambitious goal to halve the amount of nitrogen fertiliser used on dairy farms.
We've set up four farmlets or mini farms and are managing four separate dairy herds under different pasture mixes and varying levels of nitrogen applications. This includes one farmlet where nitrogen fertiliser is not used at all.
Would you like to learn more? Preliminary data and observations from the research team are provided in our monthly farmlet report.
The trial is part of the DairyHIGH2 project funded by TIA and Dairy Australia
