here's a cantrip candidate. Eldritch Blast. I have a bias for warlock, but hear me out. it's a 1d10 force damage in the palm of your hands! don't get me started on the Eldritch Invocations that buff this Cantrip alone! I will invest most of my Invocations to just breaking Eldritch Blast's limits!

In roleplay potential? Yeah, vicious mockery is good. However, have you ever crossed an ocean with control water? I have.

No Fire Bolt, Eldrich Blast or Toll The Dead? Yikes.
Vicious Mockery is (unless you count some of the cantrips from Tasha's) the worst damage dealing cantrip of the entire list. It's the only cantrip that uses a d4 for damage, which is the smallest in the game. Even if it gives the target disadvantage, it doesn't make up for the absurdly low damage.
Meanwhile, Fire Bolt does a d10 for damage, and scales up to 4d10 at 17th level.
Eldrich Blast fires an extra 1d10 bolt per scaling level, making it have 4d10 damage at 17th level. And, it stacks with your Eldrich Invocations, which make it even more powerful.
And Toll The Dead does 1d8 to a target with full health, and 1d12 with any of its health missing, which scales up to 4d8 or 4d12 at level seventeen.
All of which are better options than Vicious Mockery.
