"A slight chance an asteroid will hit earth" Well since i'm going to be dead before an asteroid that still has chance of hitting earth i won't be seeing it.

Since we're talking theoretically here, what could we do to capture the asteroid and use it to our advantage? There are theories about using tractors (using a smaller mass object to obit a bigger mass object to direct its trajectory) or solar sails to redirect asteroids. One thing I've always thought about is instead of using expensive nuclear weapons to blast asteroids (which in turn also creates potentially hazardous meteor swarms in of itself), how about we capture it and herd to a lagrange point. There we can cut it up using telerobotics (drones) and create large shaped ballistic shells out of the asteroids strata. The reason this is important is because we can use these large ballistic shells as a vehicle for kinetic deflection against other more ominous threats such as interstellar asteroids (Oumuamua for instance) that we may not have detected in time. AKA fight fire with fire.
