I think Cobb is on reality. But to be honest, I think what matters is that 8 years has passed and we still talking about this ending. Pure and brilliant Nolanism.

Still mad that Nolan didn’t get nominated for an Oscar for this movie.

It's 2020. I just finished watching Inception. Again. Came to the interwebs to try and make sense of the ending. Again. See ya in 2021.

The ending was never confusing to me. Yes, yes I know that "it doesn't matter whether the top stopped because he found peace." That is is true. But the entire movie WAS about Cobb forgiving himself for Mal's death and it was all in his head. The biggest clue was that whenever he saw his children throughout the film, the vision would end right before he saw their faces. He NEVER saw their faces before the end. Being with those kids was his ultimate reward. They also had the same clothes on throughout the film as they did at the end.

Only in the final scene did they turn around so he can see their faces. He then picked them up which is the sign of him finally letting the past go. Nolan doesn't want the top to be the answer because the answer is there throughout the film to those that pay attention.

All the clues are there in the dialogue as well. How he describes their process and procedures as a way to bring catharsis to the client. It's what's happening to him as well. The entire film was his team working to bring him that catharsis. The end of the film is IS out of the dream, but the entire film up to that point, he was the client.

My theory is that the Director is performing Inception on you the viewer because at the end of the day you forget the film's message about Cobb and become so fixated on what actually happens to the top. The top itself is misdirect, it doesnt matter, because a totem only works for one person, Mal's totem doesn't actually work for Cobb, Cobb's totem is actually his wedding ring, anytime the film tells us Cobb is in a dream he's wearing a wedding ring, anytime the film tells us he's not in a dream he's not wearing his wedding ring. Regardless of whether he has the ring or not, or hes dreaming or not dreaming Cobb is always watching the top. And what happens as he's always watching the top? Mal shows up, the tops' true meaning is that Cobb can't let go of her. At the end of he film, when he sees his kids he doesn't care to see if the top stops spinning or not because he's happy with the reality in front of him. He doesn't even care if its a dream or not anymore because he's at peace with himself. You become so fixated on Cobb's reality you forget yourself reality is what you want it to be. The fact theres so much debate about the film goes to show what a piece of true art it is, only a true piece of art can be interpreted in so many ways and none can be wrong.

Nolan is real Legend

Cobb’s father set it all up. Cobb was the client all along. He sent him to Ariadne on purpose. She acted clueless about the whole thing on purpose so that it would look more real to Cobb. Cobb’s father wanted him to be able to build again and stuff so he set all this up to get rid of his guilt which was blocking his path to building again

The top falls. He's in reality, happy with his children. End of story.

I watched inception for the billionth time😂😂😂. I started to think that maybe his totem are his children. They never look at him in the dream world.

"Step Back to reality. Oop there goes gravity."

So there was an interview with Michael Cane, and he said he was confused about the plot, and when it was real and not. He said Nolan put it simply for him, "if you are in the scene with him, then that part is real not a dream."

So, he was awake at the end.

His father was the true master of inception and decided to give him peace. Ariadne was just put in place to get intel and help rid Cobb of the idea of his wife. She was already his fathers new protege. Cobb was still dreaming.

It's actually quite simple, in every scene where Cobb is dreaming he is wearing his wedding ring but when he is in the real world he is NOT. Therefore, the ending of the movie was real and was not a dream.
