A first-order circuit is an electronic circuit that contains only one energy storage element, such as a capacitor or an inductor. The transient response of a first-order circuit describes how the circuit responds to a sudden change in its input. When the input to the circuit changes suddenly, the energy stored in the circuit's energy storage element is initially discharged or charged, depending on the direction of the change. The circuit then settles into a new steady state as the energy storage element becomes fully charged or discharged. The time constant of the circuit determines how quickly the circuit reaches its new steady state, and is proportional to the value of the energy storage element and the resistance in the circuit.
