The Truth About Engineering

There are millions of engineers in the world, all with their own stories, backgrounds, and areas of expertise. Therefore it is very difficult to say exactly what you can expect when you enter your career. However there are some generalizations we can make and this video should give you an idea of what experiences are out there when starting out as an engineer out of college.

I'm not afraid of not getting what I want after college;
I'm actually afraid of not getting anything at all.

As an engineering student, I was expecting 6 minutes of crying, but this'll do too, I guess.

I had the opposite. After struggling to complete my studies at uni (because I was an apprentice chef in high school) and having a horrible GPA my uni wouldn’t send my CV to industry partners because I wasn’t a good look for the uni. I then later found out that after 4 years of studying I had undiagnosed ADHD. Long story short I found a engineering job in control systems. I’m literally programming critical infrastructure for my country and making meaningful progress for my country. If you don’t have grit you won’t achieve your dreams.

Personally I think the biggest problem is the money engineering/computer science can earn. Starting salaries usually average upwards of 75k which is often enough for people to study that in school despite not caring or enjoying it in school. When money is the only reason you followed a certain direction then of course you won’t enjoy your job.

I am choosing an engineering path and I am looking forward to it. I am glad vidoes like this exist because if they didnt then lots of people would be unsure and uncertain on whether engineering is right for them. Great video like always.

This channel is SIGNIFICANTLY better than "EngineeredTruth". I'm never watching that other biased, crappy, pessimistic channel again.

Thanks so much for telling the actual truth and being direct.

The truth is this: engineering is just like any other job. You either are lucky and you love it, or you are unlucky and you hate it. The working environment is the most important part, just like any other job. When it comes to work, you have to be content with pursuing happiness at all cost. You spend a lot of time at work. Nothing is worth sacrificing you health for. Dont work overtime unless you absolutely have to. Dont stay with a specific job just because its secure. Nothing is more secure than happiness. If you have to leave engineering for happiness, then do it. Not every engineering job is the same, that is true for every industry. Dont put all your eggs in one basket. People make the common mistake in engineering that they can just put EVERYTHING into it and it will be rewarding. No kiddo. That's not how the world works. Be prepared for disappointment.

Zach, I enjoy your videos. As a former high school teacher, I was the teacher adviser to our schools robotics team. Several of my students went onto engineering school and I often forward your videos to those I keep in touch with. Thanks for your work!

Patience is the key. No matter how passionate you are. It takes time to climb up the ladder.

As an engineer with 30 years of experience, I applaud this video. In my early career I had to do, what at that time, seem to be menial tasks. With some perspective, these simple administrative tasks have taught me how engineering as a craft work. I now now every detail of my area of expertise which helps me to be a better engineering manager.

My dad is 53 and makes 110k a year. He started at around 65k. You start out making money but you don’t get big raises. He has been through 3 Jobs in his 35 years of working. He left one for another, got laid off, and found another job. His 2nd job he was making 130k starting. The field of engineering is uncertain. I’m not telling you whether or not to be an engineer cuz no one knows how the job market is going to be in the future. That said, if you work for a company that supplies the US Gov, your job is pretty safe. I’m majoring in welding engineering at Ohio State and the classes are hard, but doable. I had a passion for both STEM and Law. I kind of wish I would’ve pursued a career as a lawyer, but if I was a pre law major I would think the same about engineering. I hope you find this helpful and wish you the best of luck on whatever you may pursue. I encourage you to go in undecided in the college of engineering in college, or just undecided as a whole. Good luck, we all may need it.

Jokes aside, yes what this guy says is approximately true. But it may not be the same for you, so take it with a grain of salt. We need these kind of videos to show us(young engineers) the **real** future, in fact he is sort of like a mentor

I’m in school for engineering right now. Thank you for talking plainly about stuff that’ll be coming my way soon. I like having a heads up and I feel like your advice/experience could be very helpful and encouraging when I finally get a job with the degree I’m working for.
Thanks. 🙂

Thank you so much for this. This is very honest and very refreshing, exactly the kind of advice I need.

I've commented on an earlier video but I just wanted to put in again how much this means to me. This kind of higher level information isn't easily shared by engineers doing well in their fields. It helps bring into perspective what the core challenges and fun parts are. Thanks so much <3

Hey man, I really enjoy the new style of videos, as well as the slightly different, more personal topics you have been going over. While I really enjoy the previous videos, and would enjoy seeing the full animation every once in a while, the new style is a refresher and I think it will do a lot for your channel! Keep it up man!
