Learning English for most cultures around the world--in today's age-- is a sign that the person learning englush, is not lazy, and seeks a more common understanding of their world. I clear indicator of a person who has high intellectual capability and a drive to communicate with the world around them. Being that English, is one of the most used languages--by the powerful of our world. I enjoy watching your videos, and seeing the culture differences. I would say I think we use "has-been" usually in a rude manner here. I only say that to someone to be mean lol. Anyway, it's so interesting to hear which words cross cultures! 😊

Fascinating video Manon. I have a tendency to use, "cool, " too much I feel, whether it'd be to describe someone's personality or the weather. I never knew that you guys don't really use it describe the weather, so that's interesting. You're right about French using English words frequently. When I visited France last year, I could overhear some people talking to one another and using some English words here and there. I was kind of surprised at first and thought, "Wow, it's a bit more common than I thought." You're very knowledgable about both French and American cultures and I think it's "cool, " (see what I mean) how you create these kinds of topics and show just how much learning and exploring there is when it comes to the whole dynamic of new cultures and expanding your horizons.

Manon! Your videos are lovely — I’ve been watching for a months and I hope you continue to make videos. I’ve had french foreign exchange students at my house in Boston and I’ve been an exchange student in Montpellier for a few months, so I emphasize with some things you say despite how long your experience was compared to mine. It’s refreshing to hear you speak French — perhaps my only-English-speaking friends here would like subtitles, but I don’t mind :). How about New York slang such as "fuggetaboutit" (forget about it)? An example of fuggetaboutit used in a sentence... Don't go to Vinny's pizzeria in Brooklyn and ask for ranch dressing, fuggetaboutit!

American Football is weird to me being American because it is a weird version of Rugby .. The way it is played in Britain is the original style but it forked off into another odd style in the US with the name Football and the rugby ball is mostly played by the hands ..

As a Texan I use a lot of Spanish words that have become common hereabouts. The English language has a knack for borrowing all kinds of words from other languages. I find it amusing that in France there is a government agency tasked to protect the French language!

I guess it's only fair that French should take a few words from English. English has certainly stolen enough words from French over the years. 🙂 Many French words in English seem to be things dealing with high culture or we use the French word for something to make it sound fancier than it really is. Anglophones have a cultural inferiority complex when it comes to the French. Because of modern communications there is a lot of cross pollinization between all languages. If we can make it a couple of more centuries without blowing ourselves up you might see languages merge into one common mutually intelligible tongue. Wouldn't that be cool.

I did not know that you used so many English words. After 1000 years of massive borrowings of words from French to English, finally you French are borrowing words from English. That's refreshing. BTW your accent is as pretty as you are.

I seen to recall that our football is called 'Football American' in French

I think the younger generation in France has picked up on a flexible approach to language which Americans have always taken. We just incorporate foreign words into American English and just deem them to be part of English now. That way one doesn't feel like one is giving up anything but in a sense "conquering it". I would hate, of course, for French to evolve too far from its incredible beauty, but I have no fear that will be the case.

Years ago there was a French family who immigrated here to open a bakery. Their young daughter got put in public school not knowing one word of English! It was tough for her! But when I met later she spoke clear English with a southern accent, except occasionally certain words she said sounded funny.
I notice some English words you say are with an American accent!
