What's up, people! I'm back with another ABBA reaction, and this time we listen to the final b-side track before moving on to their The Album (1977). So join me as we listen to an early incarnation of "Why Did It Have to Be Me?" that a few of you mentioned when I reacted to that song. The vibe (and lyrics) are notably different, so let's have some island-flavored fun with this one. Cheers!

the song is about a trip to Honolulu, Hawaii
but now in the cronologhy we are going to the ABBA Tour 1977 to Europe and Australia

Hello, so happy today, with Happy Hawaii hahaha

Happy Hawaii (1976)
It is a discreet, acceptable song, 6(7pts, within the enormous catalog of quality that ABBA has
It's happy, funny, nice, but not much more
so the voices of Agnetha & Frida blending together are so perfect and beautiful

was used as the B-side of the worldwide successful single "Knowing me knowing you" (1977)

has two special characteristics
1) the base of melody was used for other song:
"Why did it have to be me" in "Arrival" album
a major number in the live performances of the 1977 Australian tour
2) the song was used for a cartoon strip with ABBA, that later was not continued, but this initial record remained

See you in next ABBA vídeo
with "ABBA The Album"
My best regards from
Buenos Aires Argentina
South America

Love, love Benny's and Bjorn's humming underneath "i'm going to Honolulu-I'm going to Honolulu'...

There's a perormance on YouTube of the singers with the Benny Anderson Orchestra of "Why did it have to be me" with the intro of "Happy Hawaii" used at the start. That's a fun acknowledgement of the shared tune.

Why Did It Have To Me was actually the original working title. Happy Hawaii came later down the line, but ABBA went back to their original idea for the finished version.

Putting this on the back of Knowing Me, Knowing You makes me feel that 6 months, maybe a year, later she was doing her best to move on. A bright and happy piece of pop frippery and yet they couldn't resist from putting in that twist of melancholy. Still, a great way to lift a mood :)

Thank you for reacting to Happy Hawaii. I heard this song first, then when I heard the Why Did It Have To Be Me, I was surprised. Personally, I prefer Happy Hawaii, I guess because I’m more familiar with this one being the b-side of Knowing Me, Knowing You. Saxophone is the highlight in Why Did It Have To Be Me, whereas in Happy Hawaii, it’s the electric guitar.

I remember our record player broke and gouged the first half of this song when I was a kid. I was so upset. Did you notice in the background of second verse, the guys are singing "lulu, I'm go'n to Honalulu, I'm go'n to Honalulu... I'm go'n to

This is like a mix between European schlager and Beach boys..

They also had a thing with Bjorn singing at least one track on each album and with Hawaii, he had no tracks on Arrival. Since they were unhappy with Hawaii, it was a bit of a natural to return to the original intention and as we know, he got his song.
I do wonder when it came to The Album, he had no songs and all he got was that speaking bit on Move On which most people don't like much..
He got his track on Voulez Vous, and The Visitors, but came up short on Super Trouper.

Why have the Hawaiian tourist board never licensed this for their advertising? It's a mystery. Actually it's not. It's how four people who live in the cold and snow imagine Hawaii is. It had a touch of Martin Denny exotica, Quiet Village etc. It's a bit of fun but did no one ever tell them write what you know - like being an eagle! It is interesting hearing how tracks and ideas evolve, and for me I think I prefer the final version even if Bjorn is singing on it.

This one used to confuse me with "Why did it have to be me".

little bit silly lyric in my opinion. It a bit demo sounding. But a nice variation

This is a nice, catchy tune. I always thought the Board of Tourism in Hawaii should be using this song.
